A further evidence of the directionality of derivative 13 excitation is given by unpublished result. Some of the present authors recently realized a dye sensitized solar cell based on derivative 13 obtaining an external quantum efficiency of 2.7%. Conversely, a cell based on derivative 15 gave a 0.18% yield. This is in accordance with 13 having a partial charge transfer character and 15 having an almost completely delocalized cyanine-like transition and is precisely what we observed with our multidisciplinary characterization See the ESI for 13 and 15 CV plots Guaiazulene symmetric squaraine was purchased from Aldrich Chemicals (Product number 391212) Unpublished results; the measured external quantum efficiency is 0.18%
