    • The intermediate is represented by a singlet in the 31P{1H} NMR spectrum at d 44.5 ppm and also has a quintet in the proton spectrum at high field at (5-1.71 ppm, very close to that of the trans-methyl acetate complex 3.Inthe13C{1H} NMR spectrum there is a carbonyl resonance at (162.5 ppm (which correlates to the 31P resonance at (44.5 ppm). The intermediate builds up over the first3hof reaction and diminishes as 3 is formed.

    • The major product formed after prolonged irradiation of Ru(dmpe)2CH3H is Ru(dmpe)2H2, and this probably arises via reductive elimination of methane from 9 with subsequent C- H activation of the reaction solvent (THF), followed by beta hydride elimination to give the dihydride product.40-43
