    • In the homogeneous phase, the non-substituted Ru-Hbpp complex [Ru2II(bpp)(trpy)2(H2O)2]3+ in the presence of CeIV in 0.1 m triflic acid produces only oxygen gas. However, a related aqua complex [Ru2II(bpp-Bz, trpy)2(H2O)2]3, bpp-Bz: 2,2′-(4-benzyl-1H-pyrazolate-3,5-diyl)dipyridine) gives significant amounts of CO2 under similar conditions. This difference indicates that a potential source of CO2 in the case of TiO2-42+ is also the oxidation of the benzylic methylene group.
