    • Demasculinization of X chromosomes in the Drosophila genus
    • Using species-specific microarrays, the authors find a paucity of male-biased genes on the ancestral X chromosome in multiple Drosophila species and on the newly established neo-X chromosome in Drosophila pseudoobscura. Additionally, they show that underrepresentation of male-specific genes is not only limited to male germ cells but is also observed in somatic cells, a finding that does not fit a simple X inactivation model.

    • The authors found that in eutherians and marsupials genes preferentially retropose off the X chromosome onto autosomes, with the majority of X-derived retrogenes showing testis-specific expression. Additionally, the study supports the notion that therian sex chromosomes emerged in the therian ancestor and not in mammalian common ancestor, more recently than usually thought.
