J Cataract Refract Surg 2008; 34:949-956. In this study, findings confirmed that the structures involved in physiological accommodation preserve contraction and movement capabilities in pseudophakic eyes, even those that are the presbyopic age range. Further, the study notes some eyes with monofocal IOLs are capable of accommodation.

•• Pepose JS, Qazi MA, Davies J, et al. Visual performance of patients with bilateral vs combination crystalens, ReZoom, and ReSTOR intraocular lens implants. Am J Ophthalmol 2007; 144:347-357. The above study is the first extensive analysis of 'mix and match' techniques. Any combination of crystalens in one or both eyes yielded better intermediate results, whereas any combination of ReSTOR in one or both eyes yielded better near vision results. Multifocal implantation is associated with lower contrast sensitivity and more subjective reports of photic phenomena. Mixing accommodating and multifocal lenses results in the least amount of night symptoms.

This cross-sectional, patient preference-based, time trade-off utility analysis concludes presbyopia corrected with glasses is associated with a nominal decrease in quality of life similar to treated hypertension. Extrapolating to the general population, about 10% of those patients maybe suited for surgical correction of the condition.
