    • For the purposes of this article, the terms 'liar' and 'deceiver' will be used interchangeably to denote a person who is attempting to lie to another, whether or not successful in that attempt. Those charged with the task of determining whether or not they are being lied to will be referred to as 'lie detectors' or merely 'detectors'. The liar's verbal and non-verbal efforts to deceive will be termed his/her 'presentation'. Although the author considers 'lying' and 'deception' to be two independent concepts, for the purposes of this article these terms and their derivatives will be used interchangeably.
