Vertical transmission of diverse microbes in the tropical sponge Corticium sp.
-
Using 16S rRNA gene clone libraries and flourescence in situ hybridisation for cell localisation, the authors identified a group of microorganisms that are present in sponge embryos during development and in all adult samples tested. Thus, providing for the first time strong evidence for the inheritance of a mixed microbial community in marine invertebrates.
