This study shows that urea recycling via UT-A2 is upregulated when urea recycling via UT-B is knocked out. This compensatory response may explain the mild urine-concentrating defect in UT-B-knockout mice and people who lack UT-B/Kidd antigen.

Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 2004; 286:F760-F766. This is an important study which shows that administering vasopressin to a Brattleboro rat for 12 days increases UT-A1 abundance, and it confirmed previous studies showing that 5 days of vasopressin decreased UT-A1 abundance. This paper proposes the idea that the delayed increase in UT-A1 results from vasopressin indirectly increasing UT-A1 transcription after initially increasing medullary osmolality.

    • Fenton RA, Chou C-L, Ageloff S, et al. Increased collecting duct urea transporter expression in Dahl salt-sensitive rats. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 2003; 285:F143-F151. This study shows that Dahl salt-sensitive rats have an increase in the protein abundance of UT-A1 and UT-A3, and the corticosterone-inactivating enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type II. Inactivating glucocorticoids by increasing 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type II would lessen the repression and increase UT-A1 and UT-A3 transcription and abundance.

    • Kim D-U, Sands JM, Klein JD. Changes in renal medullary transport proteins during uncontrolled diabetes mellitus in rats. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 2003; 285:F303-F309. This study shows that UT-A1 decreases during the first 3-5 days after inducing diabetes in rats, but increases at 10-21 days after diabetes. The later increase, along with increases in AQP2 and NKCC2/BSC1, will ameliorate the loss of water and solute during the ongoing glucose-induced osmotic diuresis. This may explain why patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus generally present with volume depletion but not in shock.
