Drosophila alpha/beta mushroom body neurons form a branch-specific, long-term cellular memory trace after spaced olfactory conditioning
-
This publication presents an optical imaging study on learning-induced changes of neuronal activity in mushroom body neurons. The authors find that a training procedure that can induce long-term memory leads to a change in activity evoked by the trained odor. Interestingly, this change in activity is detectable only in a particular branch of Kenyon cells that has previously been shown to be involved in long-term memory formation.

Sequential use of mushroom body neuron subsets during Drosophila odor memory processing

This study demonstrates that different subsets of Kenyon cells are required for distinct processes of olfactory learning and memory. Whereas one population of Kenyon cells is needed for acquisition and stabilization of olfactory memory, another subset of Kenyon cells is required for the retrieval of the memory.

Krashes M.J., Keene A.C., Leung B., Armstrong J.D., and Waddell S. Sequential use of mushroom body neuron subsets during Drosophila odor memory processing. Neuron 53 (2007) 103-115. This study demonstrates that different subsets of Kenyon cells are required for distinct processes of olfactory learning and memory. Whereas one population of Kenyon cells is needed for acquisition and stabilization of olfactory memory, another subset of Kenyon cells is required for the retrieval of the memory.

Multiple memory traces for olfactory reward learning in Drosophila
-
This publication provides evidence for two independent memory traces in the Drosophila brain. Whereas aversive and appetitive olfactory short-term memory can be localized to the mushroom body, an additional memory trace for appetitive short-term memory has been found in projection neurons.
