28. Just as density of states are projected onto different sites and orbitals, energy bands can also be projected onto different site orbitals. Some of these can be "fattened" in order to distinguish them from the rest of the band structure. These projected fattened bands are called the "fat bands." For more details, see O. Jepsen and O. K.
