    • If during the substitution test for the determination of the steric relationship between these protons one of the protons of the considered CH 2 unit is substituted, simultaneously, central and planar chirality are introduced into the molecule. If the other hydrogen atom of the considered CH2 group is changed, the same chiral elements are introduced into the molecule. The chiral carbon atom has opposite configurations in the two substitution tests, while the configuration of the planar chirality is the same for both substituted derivatives. The substitution test leads to diastereoisomers, so the protons of the considered CH2 group are diastereotopic. It is a peculiar case in which protons of a CH2 group pertaining to an achiral molecule (without stereogenic elements) are diastereotopic. As an example, a similar situation was reported for citric acid: F. A. L. Anet, J. Park, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1992, 114, 411-416
