    • Treatment of obesity hypoventilation syndrome and serum leptin
    • This study identified a fall in circulating leptin levels in patients with OHS treated effectively with positive pressure therapy. In contrast, leptin levels in patients who were not compliant with treatment were unchanged, as were daytime blood gases

    • Redolfi S, Corda L, La Piana G, et al. Long-term noninvasive ventilation increases chemosensitivity and leptin in obesity-hypoventilation syndrome. Respir Med 2007; 101:1191-1195. This pilot study found lower leptin levels in OHS patients without OSA syndrome than in eucapnic obese patients without OSA syndrome. This is in contrast to the findings of previous studies conducted in obese patients with sleep disordered breathing, in whom leptin levels were found to be increased. In this subgroup of OHS patients, leptin increased following normalization of diurnal blood gases with nocturnal ventilation.
