    • No buffer was employed in order to avoid potential interferences. The pH was carefully adjusted to 7.9 after every addition of citrate and before every measurement. The pH was maintained within 7.90 ± 0.05. In a control experiment we used HEPES as buffer and citrate as analyte, with no appreciable effect on the fluorescence response. However, we decided to keep the systems object of study as simple as possible for the rest of titrations in order to register only the interactions between complex 2 and carboxylates. • To illustrate the reproducibility of the calibration, two different stocks of 2, prepared at different times, measured with different fluorescence setups, yielded the following slopes (and R): 567.241 (R = 0.99764) and 561.665 (R = 0.99792). Estimated detection limit of 0.5 M

    • Control of pH for this experiment was impossible without the use of buffer. The ratio methanol: water was changed in order to prevent evaporation during the experimental set-up
