In all the cases, in order to avoid the undesirable reactions of further benzylation of 3 and benzylation of benzyl alcohol itself, it is important to use an excess amount of arene. Arene can be recovered in a range of 80-85% (on the basis of the total amount of arene employed) by direct distillation from the reaction mixture.
