A population genetic interpretation of interspecific models of sequence change is introduced and applied to the evolution of transcription-factor-binding sites. The interpretation is particularly attractive because it permits the effects of phenotype on interspecific rates to be converted to relative fitnesses.

    • Thorne JL, Choi SC, Yu J, Higgs PG, Kishino H: Population genetics without intraspecific data. Mol Biol Evol 2007, in press. This is an attempt to reconcile population genetics with interspecific evolutionary models that have rates of sequence change being influenced by the effects of the changes on phenotypes such as RNA secondary structure or protein tertiary structure. This reconciliation allows interspecific models to be assessed by whether they are consistent with population genetic evidence.
