    • In vivo analysis of quiescent adult neural stem cells responding to Sonic hedgehog
    • Using Gli1-Cre transgenic animals, the authors found that initially a small proportion of cells (including neural stem cells and transit-amplifying precursors) respond to the Shh in the neurogenic areas of the adult brain. Genetic fate-mapping experiments showed that this population subsequently enlarges to provide new neurons continuously. The authors provide one of the first reports that neural stem cells can self-renew in vivo in rodents for over a year and can generate multiple cell types.

    • Neuronal fate determinants of adult olfactory bulb neurogenesis
    • Besides demonstrating the key role of the transcription factor Pax6 in adult olfactory bulb neurogenesis and the specification of dopaminergic periglomerular neurons, these authors suggest for the first time a distinct origin for different neuronal subtypes in the olfactory bulb generated in the adult. They demonstrated that most periglomerular neurons including the dopaminergic subtype originate mainly in the rostral migratory stream, whereas the majority of granule neurons originate in the SEZ.
