    • Genetic heterogeneity between the three components of the autism spectrum: a twin study
    • A large normative twin study that examines the heritability of the three core behaviors that are disrupted in ASDs. The findings illustrate that features of social behavior, communication and obsessive behavior are highly heritable but independent of each other. The study emphasizes the likelihood that the autisms result from mutations in different combinations of genes that, together with a modest contribution of environmental factors, might underlie the disruptions in the triad of core behaviors.

    • Minicolumnar abnormalities in autism
    • This study reproduces the original description from 2003 [79] of the disruption to the size and regularity of the primary functional unit of the cerebral cortex, the minicolumn, in the autisms. Altered morphology of this information-processing unit occurs in several different cortical regions, and can be attributed to disruption of both short-range and long-range connections.

    • Neuropsychological functioning in children with autism: further evidence for disordered complex information processing
    • The paper describes results from a study of neurocognitive and executive functioning in children who have high-functioning ASDs (i.e. children who show some of the core symptoms of the autisms but can function independently in society). The findings demonstrate that basic information processing can be intact in high-functioning ASDs but that complex information processing, which requires substantial integration of information across modalities, is disturbed.

    • A genetic variant that disrupts MET transcription is associated with autism
    • This is the first family-based genetic study to demonstrate an association of the autisms with a common variant in a candidate gene that also results in disrupted gene function. The autism-associated allele, which increases risk 2.0-2.5 fold, reduces transcription and is located in the promoter region of the gene encoding the tyrosine kinase receptor MET. MET is involved in the development of local and long-range cortical circuits and the cerebellum.
