The close-packing of the alkyl chains in the Langmuir film of dendrimers has already been reported, see, for example: Pao, W. J.; Zhang, F.; Heiney, P. A.; Mitchell, C.; Cho, W. D.; Percec, V. Phys. Rev. E. 2003, 67,021601 and ref 21. Note that the conformation of molecule 1 of ref 21 would not easily fit Israelachvili's definitions but still has alkyl chains closely packed and perpendicular to the interface.

Brewster angle microscopy is optimized for the recording of pictures. Still given its similarities with ellipsometry, it is possible to get an estimate of the films thickness d. Nevertheless, the measurement is not perfect, the main problem being that the index of refraction of our film is unknown. As an estimate we have taken n = 1.50, which usually gives realistic values when checked against films made with fatty acids. Still, an error of 5% in the index of refraction induces an error of 25% in the value of d. Hence the value we give is not to be taken too literally, but the comparison of two molecules with similar structures is perfectly sound.
