The β-amino aldehyde 3a can be isolated; however, the ee will decrease on its isolation. For instance, β-amino aldehyde 3a was isolated in 66% yield with 54% ee after 5 h of (S)-proline catalysis at -20°C. The aldehyde 3 a was oxidized in one step to the corresponding dibenzylated 2-aminomethyl-3-methylbutyric acid in 72% yield.
