Negligible effect of ions on the hydrogen-bond structure in liquid water
-
This paper describes dynamic measurements of water molecules in salt solutions by using femtosecond mid-infrared pump-probe spectroscopy. It is shown directly for the first time that water structure outside the hydration shell of an ion is not influenced by the ion. This result is valid for both kosmotropic ions and chaotropic ions.

On the mechanism of the Hofmeister effect
-
This paper presents a mechanic study of the Hofmeister series on a monolayer at the air/water interface by vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy. It is found that the Hofmeister effect on monolayer ordering is based on the abilities of the anions to penetrate into the hydrophobic portion of the monolayer.

Specific ion effects on the water solubility of macromolecules: PNIPAM and the Hofmeister series
-
This paper studies the influence of specific ions on the LCST of a thermoresponsive polymer, PNIPAM. A model is proposed to explain the Hofmeister effect, which only involves the ions' direct interactions with the macromolecule and its first hydration shell. It was found that kosmotropic and chaotropic anions modulate the LCST by separate mechanisms.
