    • Long range vs. short range forces: The present state of play
    • It would take us to far afield to cite and explore the vast literature on measurements of hydration forces, especially lipids, pioneered by Parsegian et al. Note, however, that specific ion effects inexplicable by 'hydration plus double layer, with or without continuum Lifshitz' are coming increasingly into focus. The (fitted exponential) range of hydration forces varies considerably from lipid to lipid. This can be sometimes be accounted for by models that allow cooperative dipole headgroup fluctuations.

    • The universally used characterisations used for interpretation of ion binding are a special limiting case of an application of the poisson boltzman equation. It is an electrostatic theory that even if dispersion forces were absent, is correct only in the limit of tight binding. They are not absent, and numbers assigned to binding are pretty much non-sense. There is a considerable literature on specific ion effects with micelles, vesicles and microemulsions.
