    • This article describes the first evidence that arginine methylation is involved in early T cell signal transduction upon CD28 co-stimulation. The authors show that CD28 engagement increases protein arginine methyltransferase activity. They also describe the arginine methylation of Vav-1, the modified form of which resides in the nuclear compartment.

    • Arginine methylation of NIP45 modulates cytokine gene expression in effector T lymphocytes
    • This is the first work to describe a functional role of arginine methylation in Th1 and Th2 cells. NIP45 was found to be methylated on its amino-terminus by PRMT1, and this methylation event was shown to modulate the interaction between NIP45 and NF-ATc2. The amino-terminal region of NIP45 is necessary for potent NIP45-induced augmentation of NF-AT transactivation and is responsible for PRMT1 coactivation of the IL-4 promoter.

    • Histone deimination antagonizes arginine methylation
    • ••] provide the first evidence that monomethylated arginines on histone H3 can be removed by PAD. Removal of the monomethylamine by PAD4 resulted in the formation of an atypical amino acid citrulline. It was also shown that conversion of unmodified arginines into citrulline by PAD4 led to competitive inhibition of PRMT4-mediated arginine methylation and gene expression.
