This study reports that the presence of minor physical abnormalities related to ventricular enlargement potentially links neurodevelopmental and neurodegeneralive processes in schizophrenia.

The meta-analysis includes four times as many studies as previous meta-analyses, and this study concludes that some second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic agents are more effective than first-generation (typical) antipsychotic agents. The authors present evidence, which they believe undermines the claims in Geddes et al. [60], that the differences between second-generation and first-generation antipsychotic agents were largely artifact.

This study tried to address some of the interpretation difficulties raised in Geddes et al. [60] by looking exclusively at comparisons with low-potency typical antipsychotic agents.

Am J Psychiatry 2003; 160:1396-1404. A high dropout rate in this study demonstrates some of the difficulties of research in this area.
64. Moncrieff J. Clozapine v conventional antipsychotic drugs for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Br J Psychiatry 2003; 183:161-166. This study raises doubts about the claims made for clozapine as the best drug for treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
