In this context, it is worth mentioning a recent theoretical work on the van der Waals force in two-dimensionally anisotropic materials: R. R. Degastine, D. C. Prieve, and L. R. White, J. Colloid Interface Sci. JCISA5 0021-9797 249, 78 (2002). The paper, however, does not contain considerations on the quantum torque.

In the calculation of the temperature dependence of the torque we have assumed that, regardless of the temperature, the dielectric functions of the interacting materials are equal to the ones described by Eq. d3.2 and by the parameters of Table 1, which refer to room temperature. This approximation does not affect the conclusion that the torque is solely generated by virtual photons. From an experimental point of view, the assumption is indeed correct if one performs experiments at T 300K. However, it is worth stressing that, at T 278K, BaTiO3 crystals undergo a transition of their crystalline structure from tetragonal to orthorhombic [M. E. Lines and A. M. Glass, Principles and applications of ferroelectrics and related materials (Clarendon, Oxford, 1977)]. Therefore, results obtained in this paper are valid only for T>278K.

Several groups recently demonstrated that small optically trapped particles can be rotated by means of angular momentum transfer of light (see, for example, M. E. J. Friese, T. A. Niemenen, N. R. Heckenberg, and H. Rubinsztein-Dunlop, Nature (London) NATUAS 0028-0836 10.1038/28566 394, 348 (1998). The sensitivity achieved in this kind of experiments is generally better than 10-19Nm.
