    • To assert the existence of a chemical equilibrium, the analytical response must be a nonlinear function of the ligand concentration (see Person, W. B. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1965, 87, 167-170). This is most prominent when the equilibrium concentration of the bound complex is on the same order of magnitude as the concentration of the more dilute of the two unbound components. However, the high concentration conditions required for NMR spectroscopy on 1:3 mean that over 99% of 1 is bound, and the nonlinear region of the binding isotherm cannot be observed with any fidelity.
