    • Possible protective role for C-reactive protein in atherogenesis: Complement activation by modified lipoproteins halts before detrimental terminal sequence

Possible protective role for C-reactive protein in atherogenesis: complement activation by modified lipoproteins halts before detrimental terminal sequence. Circulation 2004; 109:1870-1876. This paper compares the activation of the complement system by enzymatically remodeled LDL in the presence and absence of CRP. It reports that binding of CRP to enzymatically remodeled LDL triggers complement activation faster, but the resulting complement activation halts before the terminal cascade. The data also show a lack of complement-activating capacity by native and oxidized LDL.

    • Sattler KJ, Woodrum JE, Galili O, et al. Concurrent treatment with renin-angiotensin system blockers and acetylsalicylic acid reduces nuclear factor kappaB activation and C-reactive protein expression in human carotid artery plaques. Stroke 2005; 36:14-20. The authors detected CRP mRNA within carotid artery plaques, suggesting that CRP is transcribed locally. The combined treatment with renin-angiotensin system blockers and acetylsalicylic acid reduced the expression of CRP within the atherosclerotic lesions.

    • Possible contribution of C-reactive protein within coronary plaque to increasing its own plasma levels across coronary circulation
    • Ishikawa T, Imamura T, Hatakeyama K, et al. Possible contribution of C-reactive protein within coronary plaque to increasing its own plasma levels across coronary circulation. Am J Cardiol 2004; 93:611-614. This study detected CRP mRNA in coronary plaques and showed that plasma CRP levels were significantly higher in the great cardiac vein than in the coronary artery. The increase in transcoronary CRP level was proportional to the severity of coronary artery disease.
