    • The blank experiment was conducted under similar conditions to the original experiment but without the presence of the copper catalyst. This experiment ruled out non-specific absorption of the dye to BSA, proving that the coupled product 8 had been formed. For UV/Vis spectra see supplementary information.

    • Assuming 2.5 Å for every repeat unit, the length of the stretched PS tail (40 repeat units) can be calculated to be 10 nm. Estimating the size of the BSA head group is more difficult as the exact modification site (location of Cys34) is unknown and hence the length can vary between 30 and 80 Å (according to the literature the dimensions of BSA are 30 × 80 × 80 Å), see D.
