    • Contrapuntal networks of gene expression during Arabidopsis seed filling
    • Changes in gene expression during seed development in Arabidopsis were determined using cDNA microarrays. Genes that are involved in oil synthesis have a bell-shaped curve of expression, whereas the expression of storage protein genes begins later and is maintained until late in development. More excitingly, the authors show that only a few genes, which are involved with carbohydrate and oil synthesis, are expressed at significantly lower levels in the wri1 mutant seeds than in the seeds of wildtype plants. This finding suggests that WRI1 encodes a transcription factor that governs the expression of genes that are involved in oil synthesis.

    • A flux model of glycolysis and the oxidative pentosephosphate pathway in developing Brassica napus embryos
    • 13C in amino acids and lipids is determined by GC-MS. The data are analysed, assuming steady-state flux during the feeding period and equilibration between the cytosolic and plastidic metabolite pools, using a computer model that includes the most likely pathways of metabolism in the embryo.
