Envelope-constrained neutralization-sensitive HIV-1 after heterosexual transmission
-
C.A. Derdeyn, J.M. Decker, F. Bibollet-Ruche, J.L. Mokili, M. Muldoon, S.A. Denham, M.L. Heil, F. Kasolo, R. Musonda, and B.H. Hahn Envelope-constrained neutralization-sensitive HIV-1 after heterosexual transmission Science 303 2004 2019 2022 This study was the first to reveal that viruses transmitted by heterosexual partners in Africa are sensitive to neutralizing antibody in the plasma of the infecting partner. This finding implies that early viral isolates should be considered in vaccine design and evaluation, and provides optimism that vaccine-induced neutralizing antibodies may be beneficial in blunting infection.

Harrison Structure of an unliganded simian immunodeficiency virus gp120 core Nature 433 2005 834 841 This study describes a major advance in our understanding of the structure of gp120 before it interacts with its receptors. Key findings are that the coreceptor binding domain does not exist until after CD4 binding, and that the complex structural rearrangements that occur in the gp120 inner domain are more extensive than previously appreciated.
