The review highlights the many positive effects of tannins on ruminant production, which are largely achieved by reducing the rumen degradation of forage proteins. These proteins then become available to be digested in the small intestine. The mechanism of effects on the helminth parasite burden is less clear.

The authors show that woodrat species that specialize in eating juniper have a higher capacity to eliminate PSMs from juniper than do generalists. When faced with eating novel PSMs, however, the specialists eat less, have less energy to spend on activities such as locomotion and lose more body mass than do generalists. The authors argue that these results suggest that dietary specialization requires tradeoffs in other capacities.
