Tsui BC, Wagner A, Cave D, Kearney R. Thoracic and lumbar epidural analgesia via the caudal approach using electrical stimulation guidance in pediatric patients: a review of 289 patients. Anesthesiology 2004; 100:683-689. This review uses clinical evidence to substantiate the usefulness of electrical stimulation to guide and confirm the placement of epidural catheters. In addition, this study demonstrates that placing thoracic epidurals via the caudal route in pediatric patients using nerve stimulation can be used on a routine basis instead of a direct approach.
