Single crystals of macrocycle 1 suited for X-ray structure analysis were grown by slow evaporation from mesitylene. X-ray structure analysis of ring-shaped structures, however, is inherently difficult since the large cavities in the crystal are typically filled by solvent molecules and cause structural disorder or destruction of the crystal when the solvent is lost. Additional disorder of some butyl side chains made the refinement extremely difficult (R-value after anisotropic refinement including all reflections was 0.34). Nevertheless, the packing feature of 1 is intriguing and a perfect hexagonal arrangement is found. Despite some uncertainty of the X-ray structure analysis, the lattice parameters are sufficiently accurate to be compared with the STM data in which distances typically exhibit an inaccuracy of ±0.1 Å. The top-view projection of crystal lattice along the a-axis is shown in Figure 6. Most interestingly, a perfect channel formation with diameters of nearly the cavity of the individual macrocycles is revealed (the butyl side chains are omitted for clarity). (figure presented)
