    • The economist Ernest Mandel has repeatedly pointed out that the relationship between the inner dialectic of scientific progress and the type of research preferentially funded at a specific stage of the business cycle is largely unexplored. Of course, in late capitalism this relationship is not a function of the use-value of the potential innovation, but is related to profitability (or expected surplus profits) in various sectors of the economy. The amount of research undertaken (or funded) in a field such as nanoparticles and singlet oxygen is therefore not necessarily an indicator of the potential usefulness of this scientific approach.
