1H NMR of 5 are only slightly shifted with respect to those of the precursors 8 and 9 supports the conclusion that they do not reside for any significant time within the macrocyclic cavity.

This is consistent with an attenuation in electronic communication between the pyridine nitrogen and the phenyl and thiophene rings in 4 and 5 due to their meta-connectivity and the intramolecular donor-acceptor interaction in 5 involving predominantly π-type orbitals.

The term "twistophane" is used to describe ethynyl cyclophanes that are completely ortho-conjugated and helically twisted and chiral structures such as dehydrotetraarylannulenes, dehydrotetraarylannulene-type cyclophanes, and higher homologues. Cycles 1-5 are the first reported examples of the above type of systems with integrated heterocyclic N-donor sites for metal ion coordination.

note

It may be noted that solutions of 9 in pyridine and toluene are rather unstable, turning black upon standing at ambient temperature, even in the dark, for 24 h. The stability of 9 is, however, much lower in pyridine. For example, a solution of 0.20 g of 9 in 20 mL of pyridine underwent 50% decomposition at ambient temperature in the dark during 24 h, based upon recovered starting material.
