Lancet 2003; 361:1496-1501. In a large sample population of 520 000 the EPIC investigators show an inverse association between fibre intake and colorectal cancer risk. The discrepancy between EPIC and the (negative) US Nurses' Health Study may be explained by the greater range of fibre intake in the European trial.
