Otx/otd homeobox genes specify distinct sensory neuron identities in C. elegans
-
This study, together with [15], demonstrates that all three OTX/OTD-like homeoproteins that are encoded by the C. elegans genome specify the identities of different sensory neuron subtypes via distinct mechanisms. Misexpression experiments suggest that the distinct functions of these proteins arise as a consequence of divergence in both cis-regulatory mechanisms, as well as in protein functions.

A transcriptional regulatory cascade that controls left/right asymmetry in chemosensory neurons of C. elegans
-
The ASEL and ASER neurons express distinct signaling molecules and mediate distinct sensory responses (see [27] and [28]). The authors explore the developmental mechanisms underlying this asymmetry, demonstrating that it arises from the antagonism between the gene activation and repression functions of the two protein complexes COG-1-UNC-37 and CEH-36-LIN-49. Differential levels of the COG-1 homeodomain protein in the ASEL and ASER neurons is the key effector of this competition.

Identification of genes expressed in C. elegans touch receptor neurons
-
To identify genes that are expressed in the six mechanosensory neurons, the authors performed a global gene expression analysis, using mRNA isolated from relatively pure populations of cultured mechanosensory cells. This method should be generally applicable for the analysis of expression profiles of additional embryonic cells, including chemosensory neuron subtypes.
