    • Octadecylcarbamic acid ethyl ester was prepared as follows: isocyanic acid n-octadecyl ester was dissolved in ethanol (final concentration, 50 mM) and stirred for 1 h. The excess ethanol was then evaporated to give octaecylcarbamic acid ethyl ester powder.

    • The TEM sample for CdS nanoparticles immobilized on glass substrates was prepared as follows. A thin carbon layer was vacuum-deposited on a sample with 1-layer deposition, and the sample was then exposed to hydrogen fluoride (HF) vapor for 30 s using aqueous HF solution (10%). The film was then separated from the substrate by floating in a water bath and placed on a carbon-coated TEM grid.

    • The CdS nanoparticles immobilized on glass substrates showed no detectable emission peak because of the small amount of nanoparticles (few monolayers) and low quantum efficiency of the present CdS nanoparticles. The CdS nanoparticles protected by AOT, DT, and DT/ MUO molecules did not show exciton-related emission but showed a very weak emission peak at about 600 nm due to trap-state emission, similar to the case of AOT-protected CdS nanoparticles previously reported by another group (Harruff, B. A.; Bunker, C. E. Langmuir 2003, 19, 893).
