    • We use double-side polished 〈100〉 silicon wafers with h = 100 nm of low-stress silicon nitride deposited on each side. (UC Berkeley Microfabrication Laboratory). Specific regions of the silicon substrate are removed using photolithography and anisotropic etching in an aqueous KOH solution to leave suspended silicon nitride membranes 80 μm on a side. The membrane is coated with a 20 nm silicon monoxide buffer layer, and SWNTs are then grown by catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 950°C using a iron(III) nitrate solution (50 mg in 1 L 2-propanol) as the catalyst source and a mixture of ethylene and methane (5 and 3000 seem, respectively) as the feedstock gas. SWNTs for measurement are located by AFM. All metallic leads consist of 50 nm Au with a 5 nm Cr adhesion layer. Finally, 10 nm of gold is deposited on the back of the membrane as a gate electrode.
