note
-
In refs 8 and 11, a decrease in the adhesion force at pH 12, as found in the present study, was not observed. In contrast to our system, results there were obtained with gold-covered tips and gold samples modified with mercaptan SAMs, and the deprotonation of residual silanol groups could therefore not occur (vide infra).

3 solutions at neutral pH (≈70° (Figure 4c) and ≈58° (Figure 5b), respectively). The smaller surface free energy for 2-imidazolin-1-yl-terminated SAMs may reflect the lower molecular density in the 2-imidazolin-1-yl-terminated SAMs due to the bigger size of the 2-imidazolin-1-yl groups. The smaller effect of pH on adhesion force and contact angle for 2-imidazolin-1-yl-terminated SAMs than for amino-terminated SAMs also seems to confirm a lower density of 2-imidazolin-1-yl groups in the former.

Removal of the SAMs from tip or substrate under alkaline conditions (see Ulman, A. An Introduction to Ultrathin Organic Films: from Langmuir-Blodgett to Self-Assembly; Academic Press: London, 1991.) seemed not to occur, as indicated by the reversibility of the pH dependence of the contact angles as well as adhesion forces even after immersion of the SAM substrates in alkaline solutions of pH 12.
