    • The strong and stable hydrogen-bonding interaction between the carboxylate anion and protonated acid groups is visible only at very low degrees of ionization (before, the electrostatic repulsion between negative charges on both tip and substrate overwhelms this interaction), and thus its appearance depends strongly on the exact pH of the solution.
