47. Nesse RM. Evolutionary biology: a basic science for psychiatry. World Psychiatry 2002; 1:7-9. This provides an accessible introduction to evolutionary psychopathology. It is a 'must read', being a concise and authoritative summary of the field.
48. Troisi A, McGuire M. Darwinian psychiatry and the concept of mental disorder. Neuroendocrinol Lett 2002; 23 (Suppl 4):31-38. This is probably one of the most important conceptual papers published in the review period, and is by two of most influential researchers within evolutionary psychopathology. It also fits into the general debate on what constitutes mental disorder.
49. Brüne M. Toward an integration of interpersonal and biological processes: evolutionary psychiatry as an empirically testable framework for psychiatric research. Psychiatry 2002; 65:48-57. This is an important contribution to the debates on both the categorization of mental disorder and the need for a focus on ultimate function when mental phenomena are being considered.

This is a theoretical article that highlights the importance of relating evolutionary perspectives to modern neuroscience; unfortunately, it relies a little too much on debatable criticisms of modern mainstream adaptationist evolutionary theory.

67. McLoughlin G. Is depression normal in human beings? A critique of the evolutionary perspective. Int J Ment Health Nurs 2002; 11:170-173. The article is mainly of interest because it communicates the evolutionary perspective to the academic mental health nursing community. Most of the criticisms have been addressed by the author of the target article.
68. Brown GW. Social roles, context and evolution in the origins of depression. J Health Soc Behav 2002; 43:255-276. As the author is much cited by EPP authors on the impact of negative life events, this may become an influential summary of the author's work.
69. Gilbert P, Allan S, Brough S, et al. Relationship of anhedonia and anxiety to social rank, defeat and entrapment. J Affect Disord 2002; 71:141-141. This is an important empirical contribution to the understanding of the regulation of an important aspect of many disorders.
70. O'Connor LE, Berry JW, Weiss J, Gilbert P. Guilt, fear, submission, and empathy in depression. J Affect Disord 2002; 71:19-27. This empirically tests important features of depression from a specific evolutionary perspective.
71. Hagen EH. Depression as bargaining: the case postpartum. Evol Hum Behav 2002; 23:323-336. This is an original and potentially influential new hypothesis of the functions of a specific form of depression. The empirical testing of the major hypothesis is a major step in the right direction within the young science of EPP.
72. Hagen EH. The bargaining model of depression. In: Hammerstein P, editor. Genetic and cultural evolution of cooperation. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press; 2003. This provides a good discussion of other evolutionary models of depression, in addition to presenting the author's specific hypothesis.
73. Watson PJ, Andrews PW. Toward a revised evolutionary adaptationist analysis of depression: the social navigation hypothesis. J Affect Disord 2002; 72:1-14. The authors provide original, thought-provoking and testable hypotheses of the function of depression.

76. Rachman S. Fears born and bred: non-associative fear acquisition? Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:121-126. This is an introduction, by one of the world's leading researchers of anxiety, to a special edition on phobia acquisition featuring several of the most prominent researchers in the field.
77. Poulton R, Menzies RG. Non-associative fear aquisition: a review of the evidence from retrospective and longitudinal research. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:127-149. This is an exposition of the lack of evidence of associative acquisition of phobia. It is especially interesting because of the longitudinal research described.
78. Davey GC. 'Nonspecific' rather than 'nonassociative' pathways to phobias: a commentary on Poulton and Menzies. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:151-158. This paper adds the non-specific approach to the debate on phobia acquisition.
79. Kleinknecht RA. Comments on: non-associative fear acquisition: a review of the evidence from retrospective and longitudinal research. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:159-163.
80. Marks I. Innate and learned fears are at opposite ends of a continuum of associability. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:165-167. This is a comment on the debate from one of the leading theorists of both exposure therapy and evolutionary approaches.
81. McNally RJ. On nonassociative fear emergence. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:169-172. This is a critical review of non-associative perspectives on phobia acquisition - critical to the evolutionary account.
82. Mineka S, Öhman A. Born to fear: non-associative vs associative factors in the etiology of phobias. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:173-184. This is a critical review of [81•] by two of the most important names within the sphere of biologically prepared learning theory.
83. Muris P, Merckelbach H, de Jong PJ, Ollendick TH. The etiology of specific fears and phobias in children: a critique of the non-associative account. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:185-195. The specific focus on children increases the importance of this contribution.
84. Poulton R, Menzies RG. Fears born and bred: toward a more inclusive theory of fear acquisition. Behav Res Ther 2002; 40:197-208. This is an important comment in the debate on phobia acquisition, and should be read in conjunction with the target article [77••] and the commentaries [76•,78•,79,80•-83•].
85. Mineka S, Öhman A. Phobias and preparedness: the selective, automatic and encapsulated nature of fear. Biol Psychiatry 2002; 52:927-937. This is a good statement of the authors' position, and should be read as part of the debate described above.
86. Kendler KS, Myers J, Prescott CA. The etiology of phobias. An evaluation of the stress-diathesis model. Arch Gen Psychiatry 2002; 59:242-248. This is the newest and most important contribution to the above debate, by one of the leading researchers of the genetics of psychopathology. The use of the twin-study method supplements the research presented above.
87. Collier DA. FISH, flexible joints and panic: are anxiety disorders really expressions of instability in the human genome? Br J Psychiatry 2002; 181:457-459. This paper suggests that both mental and physical disorders can be caused by similar genes, and presents a genetic-fault hypothesis of anxiety.
88. Polimeni J, Reiss JP. Evolutionary perspectives on schizophrenia. Can J Psychiatry 2003; 48:34-39. This is an accessible introduction to, and discussion of, the different evolutionary theories on schizophrenia.
89. Berlim MT, Mattevi BS, Belmonte-de-Abreu P, Crow TJ. The etiology of schizophrenia and the origin of language: overview of a theory. Compr Psychiatry 2003; 44:7-14. This is a good introduction to, and overview of, one of the most influential theories on the evolution of schizophrenia. Limitations of the theory are also discussed.
90. Crow TJ. Handedness, language lateralisation and anatomical asymmetry: relevance of protocadherin XY to hominid speciation and the aetiology of psychosis. Br J Psychiatry 2002; 181:295-297. This is a short, updated and accessible review of the basis of the author's contribution to the understanding of the evolution of schizophrenia.

104. Brüne M. Erotomanic stalking in evolutionary perspective. Behav Sci Law 2003; 21:83-88. This is an interesting approach to an area of forensic psychiatry that deserves to be informed by evolutionary theory.
