    • In control experiments, hexa-histidine-tagged hSOD containing tyrosine, leucine, and tryptophan at position 33 was prepared and subject to mass spectrometry. Ions containing amino acid 33 were clearly visible in the mass spectra of these samples.

    • p-Azido-L-phenylalanine is reduced to p-amino-L-phenylalanine in sample preparation and the latter is observed in the mass spectra. We have confirmed that the reduction does not occur in vivo by chemical derivitization of purified SOD containing p-azido-L-phenylalanine (45).
