This study gives the first glimpse of how medical treatments may be the future for diseases currently treated by surgical transplantation or repair procedures. Exogenous G-CSF is used to mobilise marrow-derived progenitors to participate in and improve repair of ischaemically-injured myocardium. This paper can be seen as a model for non-surgical, stem cell-mediated, medical treatment of severe organ injury.

    • Regression of human cirrhosis. Morphologic features and the genesis of incomplete septal cirrhosis
    • WANLESS IR, NAKASHIMA E, SHERMAN M: Regression of human cirrhosis. Morphologic features and the genesis of incomplete septal cirrhosis. Arch. Pathol. Lab. Med. (2000) 124:1599-1607. While still very controversial, this study suggests that cirrhosis is a reversible condition. If borne out by further studies, it raises the possibility that metabolic support of people with 'end stage' liver disease, by cell transplantation or bioartificial liver devices, may lead to regression of cirrhosis and diminish the need for organ transplantation.
