note
-
Note that the occurrence of an additional sulfur species for BP1/Ag somewhat decreases the credibility of the results for this particular system. However. a good correlation of the parameters derived from the HRXPS spectra for this film with the analogous parameters for other investigated SAMs see below) justifies the inclusion of the data for BP1/ Ag into this article. One must consider that the portion of the additional sulfur species can be noticeably smaller than it looks in Figure 3 if it is located not in the vicinity of the thiolate-Ag interface, but closer to the SAM surface or if it is locally not covered by a dense organic matrix. For BP3/Ag the situation is much more better, because the contribution of an additional sulfur species is very small. We want also to emphasize that the assignment of the additional sulfur species to the atomic sulfur or to a differently bound BP1 molecules is somewhat tentative.

note
-
Of course, BPn SAMs are not an ideal system without any defects at all. However, a high percentage of defects or inhomogeneities, which should be basically different for different BPn SAMs. would destroy any correlation for most of the experimental values. This does not happen, which evidences that the respective portion is rather small and the role of defects or inhomogeneities is negligible.
