    • In ref 12, Castner et al. pointed out the unbound layer effect on the XPS spectra. We also confirmed the weak and broad structure at around 164 eV which is attributed to the unbound layer in the S(2p) spectra. However, we did not refer to this peak, because the unbound layer effect is not the main subject in this study.

    • Typically, when we measured these ODT SAMs using VG ESCALAB 220i system with a X-ray power of 180 W, the C/Au and S/Au ratios estimated from C(1s), S(2p), and Au(4f) peak areas were 1.2 ± 0.05 and 0.065 ± 0.05, respectively. When we checked the spectral dependence on the X-ray irradiation time, these values were unchanged. Moreover, the spectrum shape of the S(2p) was the almost the same as Figure 1b, c, d. The C(1s) spectra also exhibited one strong peak at 285.1 eV with fwhm of 0.9 eV after 2 and 4 h irradiation.
