    • The basic notion here is different from the "mobile proton" model that has been used to explain some features of the fragmentation behavior of peptide ions (Dongre, A. R.; Jones, J. L.; Somogyi, A.; Wysocki, V. H. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1996, 8365-8374). In the "mobile proton" model there is an energy penalty associated with mobilizing the proton; here, the proton relocates because a conformational change makes it energetically favorable.
