The sodium salt of 1-H (1-Na) was prepared and isolated as the pure form by the reaction of 1-H with an equimolar amount of NaOH and was also polymerized by the Rh complexes in water for comparison. Complete cis-transoidal poly-1-Na was obtained in ca. 80% yield, but the in-situ-generated 1-Na with a slight excess of NaOH showed a higher polymerization activity.

    • note
    • The L-isomers of other amino acids, such as alanine, valine, and serine, showed no ICDs under the conditions listed in Table S-1 with poly-1-Na. However, poly-1-Li exhibited ICDs with these amino acids in water.

    • note
    • The magnitude of the ICDs was significantly influenced by the pH and salt (NaCl) concentration, which is consistent with the ionic nature of the interaction. ICD intensity changes in the pH and salt concentration for the complex of poly-1-Na with L-methionine are available in the Supporting Information. ICD intensities decreased slowly with time probably because the polymer gradually decomposed or isomerized accompanied by a decrease in the UV-vis intensity.
