    • Developmental regulation of spine motility in the mammalian central nervous system
    • By using two-photon time-lapse imaging in cultured brain slices, this study documents rapid changes in dendritic protrusions in cerebellar Purkinje cells, as well as in pyramidal cells in the cortex and hippocampus. The authors also describe a downregulation of motility with age, and present data implicating dendritic motility as an actin-dependent, but activity-independent process. Importantly, the documentation of rapid dendritic dynamics in different cell types underlines this phenomenon as a developmental feature general to various neuronal types.

    • Rapid actin-based plasticity in dendritic spines
    • Using GFP-tagged actin as a marker to reveal the structure of dendritic spines, the authors demonstrate that rapid changes in morphology occur in synapse-associated dendritic spines as an actin-dependent process. The authors present data to make the case that these structural changes involve changes in spine shape, rather than in size of the spines. These results raise the possibility that changes in properties of spine-associated synapses may be mediated by regulated changes in spine shape.

    • Control of spine formation by electrical activity in the adult rat cerebellum
    • The authors raise two interesting points in the relationship between activity and spine formation. First, the regulation of spine number on a particular segment of dendrite may depend more on the amount of afferent activity received and less on the overall activity of the cell. Second, spine number in different dendritic segments in the same cell may be regulated separately, and also differentially, as a function of activity in their afferents. These results indicate that a significant part of the regulation of spine number occurs locally, with afferent activity to a particular dendritic segment playing an important role.
