    • Efforts to further probe this effect with a thiol at a tertiary site indeed produced smaller particles, but the materials were insoluble in water. A synthesis performed with D-penicillamine (D[-]-2-amino-3-mercaptomethylbutanoic acid) using the same conditions as that reported here for tiopronin gave clusters (HRTEM analysis) with an average core size of ∼1.2 nm.
