If one neglects the optical anisotropy in long-chain fatty acid/ amine molecules, the refractive indices of LB films of these molecules and their salts are close to 1.5 (see e.g., Paudler, M.; Ruths, J.; Riegler, H. Langmuir 1992, 8, 184; Honig, E. P.; De Konig, B. R. Surf. Sci. 1976, 56, 454). Optical anisotropy is not expected to play a role in the silver cluster LB films of this study because of distortions in the Langmuir MLs induced by the cluster surface curvature.

Azzam, R. M. A.; Bashara, N. M. Ellipsometry and Polarized Light; North Holland: New York, 1977. The ellipsomety calculations for determination of the film thickness were done with an application written by M. S. in Mathcad (a commercial mathematical package of Mathsoft Inc.). The application, ELLIP1.MCD, is available from the Mathsoft public domain on the internet.
